How much does a shower niche cost?
These are starting prices for the niche feature, separate from shower or tub-surround base labor. They are not the price of the photographed projects or an all-in retrofit quote.

From starting labor to a final estimate
Starting installation labor prices. Tile, flooring products and other purchased materials are separate unless an allowance is expressly included in your written estimate. Final pricing depends on measurements, selections, site conditions and agreed scope. Additional work and costs are discussed on site and documented before proceeding.
A qualifying standard shower with one standard niche is starting from $4,400 in combined starting labor. This is a partial labor subtotal, not an installed project total; the base shower limits and all material, preparation and other exclusions still apply.
Installation labor for a rectangular shower up to 36 × 60 in., three walls up to 8 ft high, straight-set ceramic or porcelain up to 12 × 24 in., a tiled curb and conventional shower floor.
For a new shower, the niche is an added feature alongside the base scope. For an existing shower, first establish whether the wall and waterproofing can be adapted and what surrounding work is required. Final dimensions, finishes and site conditions need a written estimate.
Before choosing the opening
Your shower niche questions.
What size should a shower niche be?
Start with the bottles you use and the storage space you need. Confirm the finished opening and shelf clearance after tile and trim, then check what the wall can accommodate. The size limits in our price table describe priced scopes, not a recommended size for every shower.
How high should a shower niche be?
There is no single height that suits everyone. Choose comfortable reach for the people using the shower, including anyone seated, then coordinate the position with tile courses, controls and the available wall framing.
Where should the niche go?
Plan its position before setting the wall tile. Framing, wall depth and concealed services can limit the opening. Confirm how the niche edges and shelves meet the grout joints, and check wall conditions before committing to a location.
Is a horizontal or vertical shower niche better?
A horizontal opening spreads storage along the wall; a tall opening can separate bottles across shelves. Choose the usable space and shelf divisions first, then compare the shape with the tile pattern. A wide opening can require extra framing review.
Should I choose corner shelves or a recessed niche?
Corner shelves project from the wall; a niche provides recessed storage. Compare bottle space, reach and the work needed at the wall. An additional niche shelf is a separately priced detail; corner-shelf installation needs its own agreed scope.
Can a niche be added to an existing tiled shower?
It needs assessment first. The niche must be supported and connected to the surrounding waterproofing, and existing tile or wall sections may need removal or repair. Our starting niche labor is not a fixed all-in retrofit price; photos alone cannot settle the work underneath.
Is tile and grout enough to waterproof a niche?
No. The niche and its connection to the shower wall need a compatible waterproofing detail. Ask what system and connections are included, and how the selected shelf detail avoids standing water. A finished photograph cannot show the hidden assembly.
What should I plan for a lighted shower niche?
Discuss lighting before the opening is built. Wet-area suitability, wiring, power-supply access and the responsible qualified trade need to be agreed separately. Our photographs show lit niches; the starting niche tile-labor prices do not include lighting or electrical work.
What determines the final shower niche installation cost?
The finished size, compartment and shelf count, wall conditions, tile cuts and edge finish all affect the scope. Purchased niche units, tile and other materials, framing changes, removal, repair, upgraded edges and lighting can add separate costs. A written estimate confirms the total for your project; a starting labor price or calculator subtotal does not.
